I Was Framed yearling sells at Tattersalls

Newmarket town emptied last night and headed to Park Paddocks for a piece of theatre and a black and white horse.
The yearling they came to see, armed with cameras and mobile phones, was foaled by painted thoroughbred stallion I Was Framed (Lot 1666), a rare ‘black overo’ sire, whose sole colt at the sale was bred by Mette Campbell-Andenaes’Andbell Stud and offered by Voute Sales.
For auctioneer Alastair Pim this was a heaven-sent chance to convert a joke down the pub into top billing at the Comedy Club and he played to his very large gallery with impish humour. To one bidder he declared, “You’ll never lose him,” while another was advised, “And when he’s finished racing you can play cowboys and Indians”. None of this seemed to faze the colt, who had soaked up attention since arriving at the sales earlier in the week, and he, or rather Andbell Stud, had the last laugh when the hammer came down at 11,000gns. A filly by the sire who sold two years ago made 8,000gns, so there is clearly brass in black and white.
The successful bidder was Martin Percival, who headed Norfolk-based Nicola Howarth and then said: “I had a telephone call ten minutes ago from [North London trainer] Andrew Reid, who said the horse was for ‘a very important client’. I know nothing more than that.”
Artzola has also a painted colt foal by I Was Framed this year, who is qualified for French breeders premiums and will be aimed to the yearling sales in Deauville next year.
