Presvis retires as top British-based money earner of all time

David Milnes (Racing Post), 6 Apr 2012

Luca Cumani has drawn stumps on the career of his admirable globetrotting stalwart Presvis, who retires as the leading British-trained money earner of all time, despite winning only two Group 1 races.

The eight-year-old's latest disappointing effort came in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free at Meydan last weekend, when he beat just one rival home after a tardy start.

Presvis racked up eight wins in 28 starts over five seasons and earned pounds 4.3 million in win and place prize-money.

The son of Sakhee was having a remarkable fourth successive outing in the Dubai Duty Free, a contest in which he recorded his most recent victory 12 months previously, earning pounds 1.9m in the process.

As well as his annual exploits in Dubai, Presvis was also a regular in Singapore and Hong Kong where he landed the Group 1 QEII Cup at Sha Tin in 2009.

Cumani said yesterday: "Presvis is in quarantine waiting to be shipped back here, but we have decided to retire him as he looked like he was ready for his pipe and slippers last weekend.

"We are used to seeing him come out of the stalls three lengths adrift, but when it was becoming 12 we knew we were nearing the end. He has been a marvellous money-spinner for us and the owner [Leonidas Marinopoulos] over the years and will leave a big hole."

Ryan Moore won seven times on the come-from-behind specialist and Cumani added: "To be able to compete in the Dubai Duty Free for four years in a row was a remarkable achievement and he retires as the current leading British based money earner."
